CHRISTIAN ATTORNEY, MARTYRED IN 2018 FOR CHINA AND NORTH KOREAN WORK, TO BE REMEMBERED WITH PORTRAIT, PLAQUE, AND EULOGY
On May 23rd, Voice of the Martyrs Board Chair Dr. Hyun Sook Foley and VOMK CEO Pastor Eric Foley were joined by Pastor Bob Fu of ChinaAid and Lawyer Ko Young-Il of Advocates Korea for the unveiling of a plaque and portrait dedicated to Chinese Christian Attorney Li Baiguang, who was martyred in February 2018.
“Attorney Li was an internationally renowned human rights defense lawyer in China who died of suspicious causes in February 2018,” said Board Chair Foley. “Although Chinese officials allege that he died of a liver condition, Attorney Li was only 49 years old. He neither drank nor smoked, and we and others saw him in excellent health shortly before his death.” Chinese authorities refused international demands for an autopsy and pushed for a quick cremation of the attorney’s body. Foley noted that Attorney Li was not the only previously healthy Chinese human rights lawyer alleged to have died from liver disease.
VOM Korea ministry partners in China reported that in October 2017, Attorney Li was abducted in Zhejiang province, beaten and threatened with dismemberment for defending farmers whose land was seized by the government.
Foley noted, “Attorney Li is a unique figure because he suffered on behalf of both Chinese underground Christians and North Korean underground Christians.” Foley pointed to Li’s representation of the family of VOMK’s former North Korea ministry partner, Korean Chinese Pastor Han Chung Ryeol, who was martyred in Changbai, China in April 2016.
During VOMK’s memorial service for Attorney Li, Pastor Bob Fu of ChinaAid gave a memorial speech; a portrait of Attorney Li painted and donated to Voice of the Martyrs by renowned American artist Hyatt Moore was unveiled; and a plaque for Attorney Li was added to the Voice of the Martyrs’ Martyrs Timeline. The Martyrs Timeline honors Christian martyrs from the time of Stephen to the present-day.
Attorney Li was survived by a widow and one child. Individuals interested in helping Voice of the Martyrs support families of martyrs like Attorney Li may call the Voice of the Martyrs Office at 02-2065-0703.
