존 비아크 목사의 인생은 전통적인 목회 성공담과 다를 것 없이 시작되었습니다. 그는 폐쇄적 국가인 미얀마에서 태어났지만 인도에서 목회 훈련을 받았습니다. 우수한 학생이자 연설가였고 그 곳에서 중요한 부흥 강사가 되었습니다. 그는 미국을 포함한  전 세계를 다니면서 목회할 수 있는 기회를 얻었습니다.

그러나 비아크 목사는 이러한 명예와 좋은 기회들을 거절하고 자신의 나라인 미얀마를 섬기기로 선택했습니다. 왜냐하면 2003 년부터 미얀마는 정부가 주는 어려움과 박해에 놓였기 때문입니다. 비아크 목사는 미얀마에서 가장 훌륭한 교육을 받고 성공한 부흥 강사 중 한 사람인데도 불구하고 매우 겸손한 생활을 하고 있으며,  사례를 받지 않는 선교사로서 자신의 모든 시간을 미얀마 곳곳에 복음을 전하는 데 쏟고 있습니다. 존 비아크 목사는 “제가 살고 있는 곳에 있는 가난한 사람들 중에 가장 가난한 목회자가 된다는 것은 꿈에도 생각지 못했습니다. ”라고 말합니다. 그러나 주님은 크리스천 지도자들이 그리스도의 사랑을 나타기 위해서 명예와 지위를 추구할 것이 아니라 기꺼이 고통을 감수해야 함을 비아크 목사에게 보여주셨습니다.

오늘날 비아크 목사는 21 명의 선교사들을 양육하여 600 명의 성도들이 있는 14 개의 교회들을 섬기도록 하고 있습니다. 그 곳은 엄청난 고난을 겪고 있는 기독교인들이 있는 나라입니다. 비아크 목사의 동료들과 성도들 대부분은 핍박 받고, 매질을 당하고, 직장에서 해고 당하고, 마을에서 쫓겨나는 것으로 예수 그리스도를 따르는 대가를 치루어 왔습니다. 한 달동안에도 비아크 목사는 자신이 하는 기독교 활동에 대한 조사로 인하여  7 번이나 경찰서에 소환되었습니다. 그러나 비아크 목사는 진실로 주님을 만난 모든이들이 모든 핍박에도 불구하고 주님을 따르는 것을 행복해 한다고  말합니다.

한국 순교자의 소리는 비아크 목사를 초빙했고, 일주일간의 일정 가운데 여러 교회와 모임에서 강연할 계획입니다. 5월9일 월요일 오후7시30분에는 마포에 위치한 한국 순교자의 소리 본부에서 일반대중에게 공개되는 특별행사를 통한 강연 및 비아크 목사의 미얀마에서 진행되는 사역을 지원하기 위하여 마음으로 내는 헌금을 받을 것입니다. 또한 5월9일 월요일 오전 10시30 분에 순교자의 소리 본부에서 기자회견이 열릴 것이고, 이 때에 비아크 목사와 <순교자의 소리>의 CEO에릭 폴리 목사와 회장인 폴리 현숙 박사와의 인터뷰가 있을 예정입니다. 기자회견에 참석하시려면 전화나 이메일로 사전 신청해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.

비아크 목사의 방한은 ‘한국 순교자의 소리’가 하는 ‘2016년 순교자의 영성 강연자들  시리즈’중 하나입니다. 이 시리즈는 전세계에서 가장 폐쇄적인 국가에서 박해 받고 있는 그리스도인들을 매달 한국으로 초대하여 한국교회 가운데 순교자의 영성이 살아나도록 하기 위함입니다.

한국 순교자의 소리의 대표 폴리 현숙 박사는 “초청 강연자들은 현재 이란(Iran), 중동(Middle east), 나이지리아(Nigeria), 에리트리아(Eritrea) 등,  지구상에서 그리스도인이 되기에 가장 힘든 나라들 가운데서 자신들의 믿음의 대가를 치르며 살고 있는 기독교 지도자들입니다. 우리가 그들을 한국에 초청하는 것은 단지 그들이 직면하고 있는 고난에 대해 듣고자 함이 아닙니다. 하나님의 사랑을 받고 나누는 것이야말로 인간이 받는 어떠한 고통보다 가치 있는 일이며 또한 세상의 어떠한 힘, 심지어 죽음일지라도 하나님의 그 사랑을 절대 멈추게 할 수 없다는 것을 그들을 통해 배우기 위함입니다. 그들의 길만이 깊고 영원한 기쁨으로 향하는 유일한 길입니다. 그것이 바로 평범한 그리스도인들의 삶인 것입니다.” 라고 말합니다.

Pastor John Biak’s life started like a traditional ministry success story. He was born in a closed country, Myanmar, but he trained for the ministry in India. He was a brilliant student and speaker and became an important evangelist there. He was given opportunities to travel and pastor anywhere in the world, including the United States.

But Pastor Biak has chosen to decline these honors and opportunities in order to serve the Lord in his home country, Myanmar, where since 2003 he has faced continual persecution and opposition. Even though Pastor Biak is one of Myanmar’s most successful and well-educated evangelists, he lives a very humble life and still spends all his time traveling around his country sharing the gospel as a volunteer missionary. “Never did I dream of becoming a pastor and minister as they are the poorest of the poor in the community,” says Pastor Biak. But the Lord showed him that Christian leaders must not pursue honor or position but instead be willing to suffer in order to show the love of Christ.

Today Pastor Biak disciples 21 missionaries who oversee 14 churches with 600 believers in a country where Christians face great difficulties. Most of Pastor Biak’s coworkers and church members have paid the price for becoming followers of Jesus Christ by being persecuted, beaten, fired from their jobs, and kicked out from their villages. In just one month Pastor Biak was called to the police station 7 times for investigation of his Christian activities. But Pastor Biak says that everyone who truly finds the Lord is happy to follow the Lord in spite of all the persecution.

Voice of the Martyrs Korea is hosting Pastor Biak in Korea, where he will speak to several churches and groups during his week-long visit. On Monday May 9 at 7:30PM he will be speaking at Voice of the Martyrs headquarters in Mapo in a special event open to the general public, where a free will offering will be received to support Pastor Biak’s ongoing work in Myanmar. A press conference will be held at Voice of the Martyrs headquarters on Monday May 9 at 10:30AM to promote the special event and enable reporters to interview Pastor Biak,

Pastor Biak’s visit is part of Voice of the Martyrs’ 2016 Martyr’s Spirit Speakers Series, which brings persecuted Christians from the most closed countries around the world to Korea each month in order to keep the Martyr’s Spirit alive in the Korean Church.

Voice of the Martyrs President Dr. Hyun Sook Foley says, “Pastor Biak and our other guest speakers are Christian leaders from Iran, the Middle East, Nigeria, Eritrea, and other countries, currently paying the price for their faith in the most challenging countries on earth to be a Christian. We are bringing them here to Korea not so they can tell us about the hardships they are facing but so they can teach us that receiving and sharing God’s love is worth any amount of human pain and that such love cannot be stopped by any power on earth, including death. Their way is the only true path to deep and eternal joy. It is the normal Christian life.”
